1996
In the 1996 Royal Rumble the Undertaker was given a title shot against Bret "The Hitman" Hart. Before the Undertaker could even get to the ring, he got into a confrontation with the jealous former champion Diesel. Diesel finally went to the back and the Undertaker continued to the ring. Bret Hart showed early one that he was going to try to make the Undertaker submit with a varity of leglock submission holds. At one point Bret Hart tried the sharpshooter, which the Undertaker countered with a choke hold. About halfway through the match, Bret Hart was able to remove the mask that the Undertaker was wearing after Mable crushed his face. While momentum shifted most of the match, the Undertaker was able to gain the final momentum and deliver a tombstone on the Hitman. The Undertaker, obviously having the victory at hand, pinned Bret Hart. However, as the referee was making his count, Diesel came down to ringside and pulled the referee out of the ring. Bret Hart was disqualified, but he kept the belt. After the Royal Rumble, Diesel was awarded a title shot at the February In Your House in a cage match. The Undertaker swore that Diesel would never wear the WWF title again.
At In Your House Bret and Diesel fought it out and Diesel appeared to have the match won at one point as he crawled to the door of the cage. The Undertaker came up from under the ring to pull Diesel under. Bret Hart climbed out of the cage and to the floor for the win. The Undertaker resurfaced along with Diesel and stood on top of the cage pointing at Diesel omniously.
